Can I eat raisins in Paryushan

    12 months ago 119

Short answer: Usually yes, raisins (kishmish) are permitted in Paryushan—if your personal vow allows them and you follow these care points.

How to take them during Paryushan

    • Keep it plain and simple: dry, unflavoured raisins only.
    • Check carefully: reject any that are moist, fermented, or show insects/fungus.
    • Do not soak them (soaking encourages life-forms/fermentation).
    • Eat only in daylight, within your meal limit (e.g., ekasan/biyasana).
    • Use fresh, clean stock; avoid long‑stored or processed/ coated raisins.

    When to avoid

    • If you have taken a “no stored items” (asanchit) tyag, then avoid all dry fruits including raisins.
    • If your pachchakkhān is “only boiled food” or “no raw items,” then avoid raisins.
    • If your local maryādā forbids dry fruits during these days, follow that.

    Sect notes (for clarity)

    • Shwetambar Paryushan (8 days): Many allow simple dry fruits (including raisins) while avoiding leafy greens; still subject to one’s vow and local practice.
    • Digambar Das‑Lakshan (10 days): Many keep stricter food limits (upvās/ekāsan); some avoid raw/dry fruits depending on their pachchakkhān.
