• In Jain belief: Jain Dharma is beginningless (anādi) and eternal. It is not “founded” at a point in time; Tirthankaras periodically reveal the same eternal path. In the current time-cycle, Lord Rishabhdev (Ādināth), the 1st Tirthankara, revived it countless ages ago.

• In recorded history: The latest full revival was by Bhagwan Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, in the 6th century BCE.

- Shvetambar tradition: Mahavira was born in 599 BCE and attained nirvāṇa in 527 BCE. - Digambar tradition: Mahavira was born in 540 BCE and attained nirvāṇa in 468 BCE.
