Timing of taking water during ekashna swetamber samaj

    12 months ago 53

Shwetambar (Śvetāmbara) practice for water during Ekashana (Ekashna)

    • Daylight only: Take water only in the day. After local sunset, stop completely (Chauvihār).
    • Usual window: From after Navkārsi (about 48 minutes after sunrise) until sunset.
    • What kind of water: Only well‑filtered, preferably freshly boiled water (ukāḍu/ushṇodaka). No ice, flavors, lemon, salt, sugar, or herbal mixes.
    • How often:
    - Strict Ekashana: Drink water only with your single meal; not before or after. - General lay practice: If not keeping the strict form, you may sip boiled, filtered water sparingly during the allowed daylight window; none after sunset.
    • During Paryushan/Chaturmās: Many observe stricter timing (e.g., freshly boiled within a short window) and keep water only in the day; follow your sangh/guru’s maryādā.
    • Health exception: If genuinely needed for health/medicine, take according to your guru/sangh’s guidance; ahimsā includes care of one’s own life.

    For simple, practical guidance:

    • “What time can I have water today if I am doing Ekashna?”
    • “When to drink water in Ekashana”
    • “Chauvihar water timing” (no water after sunset)
    • “Can we consume water whole day in Ekashna?”
