Whay not to eat potato n onion
In Jainism, eating potatoes, onions, garlic, and other root vegetables is avoided due to the principle of ahimsa (non-violence). Jains believe that when root vegetables are pulled from the ground, the entire plant is destroyed and many small life forms living in the soil are harmed or killed in the process. Additionally, root vegetables are considered to have an infinite number of souls (nigod), leading to greater violence (himsa) when consumed.
Onions and garlic are also avoided because they are believed to increase passions (kasayas) and hinder spiritual progress. Consuming such foods is thought to disturb mental calmness and spiritual discipline, which are important for those following Jain principles.
Therefore, Jains refrain from eating potatoes, onions, garlic, and similar root vegetables to minimize harm to living beings and to support their spiritual development.
