During periods when can you do pratikaman?
In Jain tradition, “periods” means menstruation. During this time, the general maryada (discipline) is:
- Do not enter the temple, do idol‑puja/abhishek, or recite sutras aloud.
- You may always do bhav (mental) pratikraman—silent repentance, prarthana, and Navkar smaran in the mind.
When can you resume formal pratikraman (with sutras)?
- Shwetambar maryada (common practice): After completing 3 full days and nights, take a head‑bath on the 4th day and you may do Devasi/Raisi pratikraman. In many Shwetambar traditions, reciting sutras aloud is resumed only after completing 5 nights.
- Digambar maryada (common practice): Observe ashauch for 4 days; on the 5th day after head‑bath you may resume normal religious activities including pratikraman.
- If bleeding continues beyond these days, wait until it stops and then resume after head‑bath.
What to do on important days (e.g., Paryushan/Samvatsari) if you are within the restricted days?
- Do bhav pratikraman silently at home and keep the resolve to perform the full vidhi once eligible. Seek forgiveness in the heart from all beings.
Daily timing windows (when you are eligible):
- Raisi (morning) pratikraman: from sunrise up to the end of the first prahar (about 3 hours after sunrise).
- Devasi (evening) pratikraman: after sunset. For the overview of “when pratikraman should be done,” see:

- Guidance on periods in Jainism and pratikraman/prayashchitta:
- If periods begin at a tirth/place of worship, do pratikraman (repentance) mentally and stop rituals immediately:
Note: Exact maryada can vary by sect, gacch/sangh, and family tradition. Always follow the guidance of your own guru/maryadapatra while keeping the above principles.
