    Types of ego

    one year ago 445

In Jainism, ego is referred to as "maan" (माण), which is one of the four main passions (kashayas) that bind the soul to the cycle of birth and death (samsara). The four kashayas are:

    1. Krodha (anger)
    2. Maan (ego/pride)
    3. Maya (deceit)
    4. Lobha (greed)

Specifically, "maan" (ego or pride) is considered a major obstacle to liberation (moksha). Jain scriptures further describe different types or forms of ego:

Types of Ego (Maan) in Jainism

According to Jain philosophy, there are generally four main types of ego or pride:

    1. Jāti-māna (Pride of caste or birth): Feeling superior because of one's birth, lineage, or family background.
    2. Bala-māna (Pride of strength): Feeling superior due to physical, mental, or material strength or power.
    3. Rūpa-māna (Pride of beauty): Feeling superior because of one's physical appearance or beauty.
    4. Tapa-māna (Pride of austerity or penance): Feeling superior because of one’s religious practices, knowledge, or spiritual achievements.

Each of these forms of ego leads to attachment and aversion, thus binding the soul with karmas.

    Overcoming Ego

Jainism teaches that conquering ego is essential for spiritual progress. Humility (vinaya) and practicing equanimity are important virtues in Jainism. Only by reducing and ultimately eliminating ego can one progress towards liberation.

Summary: In Jainism, ego (maan) is one of the primary passions and is categorized into four types: pride of birth, strength, beauty, and austerity. Overcoming all forms of ego is essential for spiritual advancement.
