In Jainism, "gati" refers to the state or realm of existence into which a soul (jiva) is born as a result of its accumulated karma. There are four main types of gati:

1. Deva Gati (Heavenly Beings or Gods):

Souls are born as celestial beings in heavenly realms due to their virtuous deeds and punya (merit).

1. Manushya Gati (Human Beings):

Souls are born as humans, which is considered the most auspicious gati because it offers the best opportunity for liberation (moksha).

1. Tiryanch Gati (Animals, Plants, and Insects):

Souls are reborn as animals, birds, insects, or plants due to their attachments and passions.

1. Naraka Gati (Hellish Beings):

Souls are born in hellish realms where they suffer, due to their extremely negative karma and harmful actions.

These four gatis are fundamental to the Jain understanding of the cycle of birth and death (samsara). The ultimate goal in Jainism is to transcend all gati by eradicating karma and attaining liberation (moksha).
