Can we consume kuttu
In Jainism there is no strict prohibition on kuttu (buckwheat) itself. Buckwheat is not a root vegetable, and many Jains eat seeds/grains when not under a strict fast. However, during special vrat or upavasa periods (like certain Navratri-style fasts), individual communities may restrict or allow specific grains differently.
- Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions sometimes have slightly different rules for what may be eaten on a vrata, so you may find minor differences in practice between these two sects. In general, kuttu can be considered permissible as a grain option outside of an exceptionally strict vrat, but certain fasting rules within a community might choose to restrict grains.
If you are observing a vrata and want to be sure, check with your guru or local Jain center for the exact guidelines they follow for that period.
