Which one is better Jainism or buddhism

    12 months ago 213

In Jain Dharma, we don’t say one path is universally “better” than the other. Jainism and Buddhism are two distinct spiritual paths, each with its own aims, methods, and teachings. Here is a simple comparison from a Jain perspective:

    • Goal of liberation
    - Jainism: Moksha (kevala jnana) through absolute purity of conduct, knowledge, and belief; freeing the soul from all karmic bondage. - Buddhism: Nirvana, the cessation of suffering and the cycle of birth and death (samsara) through insight, ethical life, and wisdom.
    • View of the self
    - Jainism: The self (atman) is eternal; liberation comes by purifying the soul of karmic matter. - Buddhism: Many schools teach anatta (no permanent self); liberation comes by realizing impermanence and letting go of clinging.
    • Core practice
    - Jainism: Strict ahimsa (non-violence) in thought, speech, and action; fasting, ascetic discipline, and self-purification; meticulous karmic accounting. - Buddhism: The Middle Way, ethical living, meditation, and wisdom; understanding the Four Noble Truths and following the Eightfold Path.
    • Ethics and lifestyle
    - Jainism: Ahimsa is central and pervasive; vegetarianism is common; vows for monks and nuns are very detailed. - Buddhism: Ahimsa is important, but lay practice emphasizes moderation, mindfulness, and compassion; monastic rules exist but may differ by tradition.
    • Path to practice
    - Jainism: Emphasizes discipline, renunciation, and direct purification of the soul; temple rites, scriptures, and guidance from Jain teachers. - Buddhism: Emphasizes insight into the nature of reality, meditation, and ethical conduct; guidance from teachers and scriptures like the Dhammapada, sutras, etc.

Which path is better depends on the seeker:

    • If you are drawn to strict non-violence, detailed karmic ethics, and the goal of a purified, omniscient soul, Jainism may feel more resonant.
    • If you are drawn to understanding suffering, developing non-attachment, and following a practical path of meditation and wisdom, Buddhism may feel more helpful.

Both paths seek liberation and encourage compassion, truth, and inner peace. If you’d like, I can explain specific Jain teachings (like ahimsa, karma, or the five great vows) in simple terms.
