IS IT OK IF I BREAK MY PACHKAN OF CHOVIAR UPHAAS IN PARYUSHAN AND HAVE FOOS
Paryushan is a sacred time for Jains to observe vrata (fasting, restraint, repentance). If you are doing Choviyar Uphaas as part of your vrata, breaking the vrata (Pachkan) is traditionally not desired, but there are compassionate and practical considerations.
- Health first: If you are feeling faint, seriously ill, or unable to continue safely, it is acceptable to protect your health. In such cases, you may reduce the pace of the vow or break it with guidance from your elder (guru/acharya) or a trusted Jain teacher. The spirit of upvas—self-control, non-violence, and mindfulness—should remain.
- Intention and mindfulness: Even if you must break the fast, keep the intention to return to the vrata as soon as you are able. Reaffirm your vows, cleanse the thoughts and actions you undertook, and resume with renewed resolve.
- Differences between Digambar and Shwetambar: Both traditions emphasize vrata during Paryushan, but the practical rules for breaking a fast and for what constitutes a valid Upvas can differ in detail. If you follow a specific tradition, consult your local guru or learned elder in your Jain sangh for the exact guidance that applies to you.
- Practical step: If you must eat, do so in a simple, light way with awareness (e.g., a small, easily digestible item) and with the feeling of restitution for any lapse, before resuming the vrata.
If you want, tell me your tradition (Digambar or Shwetambar) and any health considerations, and I’ll share a precise, simplified guidance aligned with that tradition.
