    FURTHER CLASSIFCIATION OF JIV

    one year ago 3186

In Jainism, "Jiv" refers to the soul or living being. Jivas are classified in various ways based on their attributes and capacities. A fundamental classification is based on the number of sense organs (indriyas) they possess. Here is the further classification of Jiv according to Jain philosophy:

    1. Based on Senses (Indriya): Jivas are primarily classified according to the number of senses they possess, from one to five:

    1. Ekendriya Jiv (One-sensed beings):

    - Possess only the sense of touch. - Examples: Earth-bodied (prithvikaya), Water-bodied (ap-kaya), Fire-bodied (tejas-kaya), Air-bodied (vayu-kaya), and Plant-bodied (vanaspati-kaya) beings.

    1. Dwi-Indriya Jiv (Two-sensed beings):

    - Possess senses of touch and taste. - Examples: Worms, leeches, etc.

    1. Tri-Indriya Jiv (Three-sensed beings):

    - Possess senses of touch, taste, and smell. - Examples: Ants, lice, etc.

    1. Chatur-Indriya Jiv (Four-sensed beings):

    - Possess senses of touch, taste, smell, and sight. - Examples: Bees, scorpions, etc.

    1. Panch-Indriya Jiv (Five-sensed beings):

    - Possess all five senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. - Examples: Human beings, animals, heavenly and hellish beings.

    2. Based on Mobility:

    • Sthavar Jiv (Immobile beings):
    - One-sensed beings (earth, water, fire, air, and plants).
    • Tras Jiv (Mobile beings):
    - Beings with two to five senses.

    3. Based on Development (Samjni and Asamjni):

    • Samjni Jiv:
    - Rational or developed beings (mainly five-sensed beings with mind).
    • Asamjni Jiv:
    - Non-rational or undeveloped beings (beings with less than five senses or without mind).

    4. Based on Existence (Gati): Jivas are also categorized according to the realm of existence they are born into, known as Chaturgati:

    • Deva (Celestial beings)
    • Manushya (Human beings)
    • Tiryanch (Animals, plants, etc.)
    • Naraka (Hellish beings)

These classifications help Jains understand the diversity of life and the importance of ahimsa (non-violence) toward all living beings.
