FURTHER CLASSIFICATION OF VARIOUS TYPES OF JIV

    one year ago 631

In Jainism, Jīva refers to the soul or living being. Jivas are classified in various ways based on their sensory faculties and vitalities. The most fundamental classification is based on the number of senses (indriyas) possessed by the living beings. Here is a further classification of various types of Jīva:

    1. Based on the Number of Senses (Indriyas)

    A. Ekendriya Jīva (One-sensed beings)

These have only the sense of touch.
    • Types: Earth-bodied (Prithvikaya), Water-bodied (Apkaya), Fire-bodied (Teukaya), Air-bodied (Vayukaya), Plant-bodied (Vanaspati-kaya).

    B. Beindriya Jīva (Two-sensed beings)

These have the senses of touch and taste.
    • Examples: Worms, shell creatures.

    C. Treindriya Jīva (Three-sensed beings)

These have the senses of touch, taste, and smell.
    • Examples: Ants, lice.

    D. Chaturindriya Jīva (Four-sensed beings)

These have the senses of touch, taste, smell, and sight.
    • Examples: Bees, scorpions.

    E. Panchendriya Jīva (Five-sensed beings)

These have all five senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing.
    • Sub-classification:
    - With mind (Sangni): Humans, celestial beings, hellish beings, some animals. - Without mind (Asangni): Some higher animals.

    2. Based on the Type of Body (Kāya)

    • Prithvikaya (Earth-bodied): Living beings in earth (minerals, soil).
    • Apkaya (Water-bodied): Living beings in water (dew, rain, etc.).
    • Teukaya (Fire-bodied): Living beings in fire (flames, lightning).
    • Vayukaya (Air-bodied): Living beings in air (wind, gases).
    • Vanaspati-kaya (Plant-bodied): Living beings in plants.
    - Pratyeka-vanaspati: Individual plant souls (single-bodied). - Sadharana-vanaspati: Collective or common plant souls (multi-bodied, e.g., trees like banyan, as per Jain belief).

    3. Other Classifications

By the State of Soul (Gati)

    • Heavenly (Deva)
    • Human (Manushya)
    • Animal (Tiryanch)
    • Hellish (Naraka)

    By the Bondage of Karma

    • Liberated (Siddha)
    • Non-liberated (Samsari)

    ---
