    Why 8 days of Paryushan?

    12 months ago 80

Paryushan is a sacred cleansing and self-purification period for Jains. The reason it is observed for eight days (in the Shwetambar tradition) or ten days (in some Digambar communities) is to give enough time for focused spiritual practices, reflection, and repentance.

    Key points:

    • Eight days (Shwetambar): Each day is used for self-examination, reading and listening to Jain scriptures, and performing daily rites like Samayik (meditative session), Pratikraman (confession and seeking forgiveness), and vows of restraint.
    • Last day and forgiveness: The final day is especially important for seeking forgiveness from all beings (Kshamavani or Samvatsari). This is a heartfelt act of humility, asking forgiveness for any hurt caused through thoughts, words, or deeds.
    • Eight vs ten days (traditions differ): In some Digambar communities, Paryushan is observed for ten days, with a similar emphasis on prayer, fasting, and confession, and the last day also centered on forgiveness.

    Overall purpose:

    • Purification of mind and conduct.
    • Strengthening self-discipline, compassion, and ethical living.
    • Deepening awareness of non-violence, truth, and other Jain vows.

If you’d like, I can share more about what a typical eight-day Shwetambar Paryushan schedule looks like or how Pratikraman is performed.
