Ghosts as per jainism
In Jainism there isn’t a separate supernatural “ghost” category like in some folk beliefs. What matters is the soul (jiva) and its karma. After death, a soul can be reborn in different realms depending on the karma it has accumulated. These are called gatis (realms of existence), not haunted spirits. The four broad gatis are:
- Deva gati (heavenly beings)
- Manushya gati (human beings)
- Tiryangan gati (animal, plant, and other living beings)
- Naraki gati (hell beings)
Souls move through these realms due to karma, and their stay ends when karma is exhausted, after which they may be reborn again. There is no eternal punishment or eternal “haunting”; rebirth continues until moksha (liberation) is achieved by removing karma through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. Extra note:
- Jain cosmology describes various beings and their conditions in Narak or other realms, but these are states of karmic consequence, not independent, conscious “ghosts” that haunt the living.
