    How parushan came in existence

    12 months ago 90

Parushan (also called Paryushan) is a sacred Jain period of intensive repentance, fasting and self-discipline observed annually by both major Jain communities, with slight differences in practice.

What it is and why it exists

    • Purpose: To seek forgiveness (kshama) from all beings, purify the mind, body and speech, and deepen spiritual practice through prayers, meditation, and vows.
    • Core activities: Pratikraman (confession and repentance), Samayik (limited meditation for a fixed period), and upholding ahimsa and other vows. Fasting is common, and many observe additional penances during this time.
    • Timeframe: It is tied to the annual rainy-season retreat (varshavas) and is regarded as a specially auspicious time for introspection and renewal of spiritual commitments.

    Differences between Digambar and Shwetambar

    • Duration: Shwetambar communities typically observe 8 days of Parushan, while Digambar communities commonly observe 10 days.
    • Rituals and emphasis can vary by community and temple tradition, but the overarching goal—confession, forgiveness, and spiritual purification—remains the same.

If you’d like, I can provide the exact dates for a given year or share a short sequence of prayers and observances that are commonly practiced during Parushan in the Digambar or Shwetambar traditions. You can read more here
