    When micchami dukadam

    12 months ago 125

Micchami Dukkadam is the name of a heartfelt forgiveness practice in Jainism. It is commonly spoken on the occasion of Samvatsari, the last day of the annual Paryushana festival, when Jains seek forgiveness from all living beings for any harm caused through thought, speech, or body.

    What it means (arth)

    • The phrase expresses a sincere request: “If I have harmed you in any way, through my thoughts, words, or actions, please forgive me.”
    • It is a universal act of humility and non-violence (ahimsa), aimed at cleansing the heart and renewing harmony with others.

    Who observes it

    • Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions observe forgiveness on Samvatsari, though regional customs and exact ways of recitation can vary.

    How it’s typically done

    • Individuals bow or clasp hands in respect and say Micchami Dukkadam or Kshamavani to those they know, then to others more broadly, acknowledging fault and seeking forgiveness.
    • It is also common to reflect privately on one’s own missteps and resolve to practice more carefully in the year ahead.

    Note on dates

    • Samvatsari falls on the last day of Paryushana each year, but the Gregorian date changes annually. If you’d like, I can provide the exact Samvatsari date for a specific year.
