    what is the jain cosmology

    12 months ago 283

Here is a simple outline of Jain cosmology in brief, as taught in Jain scriptures and tradition.

    • Core view: The universe (loka) is eternal and without a creator. It is made of six dravyas (categories of substance): jiva (soul), ajiva (non‑soul matter), pudgala (matter), dharma (nature of motion), adharma (nature of rest), akasha (space), and kaal (time). Souls are innumerable and can progress toward liberation (moksha).
    • Threefold division of the cosmos:
    - Urdhva-loka (the upper world): the heavens and realms above the human world, inhabited by celestial beings (devas) and siddhas (liberated souls who reside in pure bliss without physical bodies). - Madhya-loka (the middle world): the human realm where humans, animals, plants, and other life-forms reside. This is the realm where karma acts, giving beings birth, life spans, and experiences. - Adho-loka (the lower world): the nether regions or hells where beings suffer due to their karmic actions.
    • The realm of liberated souls:
    - Siddhashila: a region above Urdhva-loka where those who have attained liberation reside in perfect knowledge and bliss, free from karma.
    • Time and cycles:
    - The Jain cosmos operates in vast, repeating cosmic time cycles (mechanism of time, kalā). Each cycle has ascending (utsarpini) and descending (avasarpini) phases, during which the conditions of life, virtue, and suffering vary. These cycles are impersonal and governed by karmic law, not by any external creator.
    • The human plane and karma:
    - Humans occupy a special place because this is where liberation is possible. Karma (actions and their consequences) binds beings to the cycle of birth and death, influencing the form and duration of experiences in the various lokas. Ethical conduct, spiritual practices, and detachment lead toward purifying karma and eventually moksha.
    • Traditions and slight variations:
    - Digambara and Śvetāmbara traditions agree on the broad framework (eternal cosmos, threefold division, karma, and liberation) but differ in some details, such as interpretations of certain realms, the exact structure of the celestial hierarchies, and stylistic emphasizes in cosmological descriptions. Both traditions preserve the core aim: to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death by eliminating karmic bondage.

If you’d like, I can share a concise, original Jain sutra or stotra that references cosmology, along with a clear Jain interpretation in simple terms.
