When is pratikraman time
Pratikraman is a Jain ritual of confession and seeking forgiveness. Its timing is not fixed to a single clock-time everywhere; it is mainly practiced:
- Daily practice: Many Jains perform Pratikraman in the evening (sandhyā) or at night, and some also do a brief Pratikraman in the morning. The idea is to reflect on one’s misdeeds, repent, and resolve to practice better.
- Special periods: During Paryushan and Mahavira Jayanti, devotees often perform extended Pratikraman sessions, sometimes as part of a day-long Samayik (a 48-minute meditation) or as longer temple rites.
- Temple/family customs: Exact times can vary by local temple schedules or family tradition. Some households prefer a short Pratikraman at dusk and a longer one on special days.
Differences between Digambar and Śvētāmbara traditions are largely in ritual details and recited texts, but both honor confession, forgiveness, and self-purification through Pratikraman.
