Short answer: in Jainism there isn’t a moment in time or a location in space when every soul was in a universally “pure” state. The doctrine is that jiva is beginningless (anadi) and karma bondage is also beginningless. Purity for a soul is only achieved by shedding all karma through right conduct and eventually attaining moksha (liberation). Until that happens, the soul remains bound by karmic particles, even though its pure, conscious essence remains untouched at its core.

Key points to hold in mind

    • Anadi jiva: Souls are eternal and have no starting point. Time is cyclical and vast; there is no past moment when all souls were simultaneously pristine.
    • Beginningless karma: The karmic matter that binds a soul is also beginningless in Jain cosmology. Karma accumulates or burns away as a result of actions, thoughts, and intentions.
    • Purity vs. impurity (śuddha/kleśa): The jiva’s true nature is pure consciousness, but it becomes covered by karmic sheaths (avarana) and reactive karmas (paryāyī), which obscure it. Purity is restored not by a one-time moment, but by burning away all karmas through disciplined conduct and spiritual practice.
    • Liberation as the only pure state: The only state in which the jiva is truly pure (free of all karma) is after attaining kevala jnana and moksha, when the soul resides in siddha-loka.

A note on the traditional frames

    • Digambara and Śvetāmbara (the two main Jain traditions) agree on the basics above: karma is anadi; pure jiva exists as an undiminished consciousness beneath karmic coverings; liberation is the complete removal of karma. Differences between the traditions are about other doctrinal details, not this core point.

If you’d like, I can share short, plain-language summaries of how a jiva’s karma binds and unbinds in ordinary life (samyama, purification practices, and the path to moksha) in Jain terms.
