Why do we have boiled water
Boiled water is mainly a practical hygiene practice. In everyday Jain households, as in many cultures, people boil water to kill microbes and make it safer to drink, especially when the source might be impure or unhygienic. It helps prevent stomach infections and keeps food preparation clean.
From a Jain-ethos point of view:
- cleanliness and non-violence (ahimsa) toward all beings incl. tiny organisms are valued. Boiling water reduces the need to ingest or harm microorganisms that might be present.
- it is not a scriptural rule in Jain scriptures, but a commonsense, health-minded practice that supports purity in daily life and in ritual offerings.
If you’d like, I can explain how Jain households typically manage purity in other daily practices and how to balance modern hygiene with Jain principles.
