Michchhami Dukkadam is a traditional Jain vow of forgiveness. It expresses the wish that any harm done (deliberately or unknowingly) may bear no fruit, and invites others to forgive us in return.

    Text (core form)

    • Michchhāmi dukkaḍaṃ
    • I seek forgiveness for any harm I may have caused.

    Arth (meaning) in simple words

    • May all my misdeeds be fruitless.
    • May I be free from hurting others, and may I be forgiven by all beings.
    • May peace and harmony prevail around me.

    Notes

    • This phrase is shared during festivals like Paryushan/Das Lakshana and at the end of gatherings.
    • Both Digambara and Śwetāmbara traditions use the same core meaning, though pronunciations or small devotional nuances may differ.
