    10 days of paryushan

    12 months ago 128

Paryushan Parva is Jainism’s major period of self-purification and forgiveness. There are two main traditions:

    • Shvetambar: Paryushan lasts 8 days, ending with Samvatsari (the day of forgiveness).
    • Digambar: Paryushan lasts 10 days, known as Das Lakshana Parva, ending with Kshamavani (universal forgiveness).

Key points for “10 days” (Digambar) and how it contrasts with the 8-day version (Shvetambar):

    • Digambar (Das Lakshana Parva): Each day is devoted to one supreme virtue (das lakshana): Kshama (forgiveness), Mardav (humility), Arjava (straightforwardness), Shaucha (purity/contentment), Satya (truth), Samyam (self-control), Tapa (austerity), Tyag (renunciation), Akinchanya (non-attachment), Brahmacharya (celibacy).
    • Shvetambar: Emphasizes study, especially of the Kalpa Sutra, fasting, meditation, and daily Pratikraman; the last day is Samvatsari, when Michhami Dukkadam (forgiveness) is exchanged with all beings.

Important rituals and practices (common themes):

    • Fasting or constrained eating
    • Readings from Jain scriptures and increased prayer
    • Pratikraman (confession and soul-searching)
    • Forgiveness: Michhami Dukkadam or Kshamavani, seeking and granting forgiveness to all living beings
    • Charity and self-discipline

Absolute dates for 2025 (based on traditional lunar-calendar planning):

    • Shvetambar Paryushan 2025: August 21 to August 28, 2025 (Samvatsari on August 28)
    • Digambar Paryushan (Das Lakshan Parva) 2025: August 29 to September 5, 2025 (Kshamavani on September 5)
