How many acharya are there
There isn’t a single number of Acharyas in Jainism. Each sect and sub-sect has its own line of Acharyas, so the total is multiple and varies by tradition (Digambar, Śvetāmbara, and their gacchas and sanghs).
As of today (August 25, 2025), some widely recognized current Acharyas are:
- Śvetāmbara Terapanth: Acharya Mahashraman (11th Acharya since 2010).
- Śvetāmbara Sthanakvasi: Acharya Shivmuni Ji Maharaj (active leader in the Vardhman Shraman Sangh).
- Śvetāmbara Murtipūjak lineages: different gacchas have their own Acharyas (examples include Acharya Vijay Nityanand Surishwar Ji Maharaj in some lists).
- Digambar traditions: multiple lineages with their own Acharyas (examples commonly cited in contemporary sources).
If you have a specific sect or gaccha in mind, I can give the exact current Acharyā for that lineage.
