I follow Digambara Jainism. I am healthy young individual and can take one meal fasting for 10 days

Thanks for sharing. In Digambara Jain practice, fasting (upvas) is a respected vrata (vow) and many followers undertake periods of reduced eating as a discipline. A plan to fast on one meal a day for 10 consecutive days is within traditional possibilities, provided it is done with care for health and with proper guidance.

    Practical guidance

    • Confirm suitability: Since you’re healthy, a 10-day, one-meal-a-day plan is feasible for many, but it’s best to check with a trusted Jain monk/teacher and, if you have any health concerns, with a healthcare professional before starting.
    • Daily rhythm: Typically, one meal is taken once in the day (often around midday) and no other solid foods before the next day; liquids like water, clear juices, and plain tea are commonly allowed, but confirm what's appropriate in your tradition.
    • Food choice: Keep the meal light and simple, focusing on sattvik Jain foods. Avoid root vegetables on some Digambara practices, and prefer easily digestible, prepared foods. Do not overeat in the single meal.
    • Pace and exertion: Avoid intense physical exertion during the fast. Rest as needed and maintain calm, meditative practices (japa, pratikraman, or reflection) to support the vrata.
    • Hydration and health signals: Drink water regularly. If you feel faint, extremely weak, or have any medical concerns, pause the fast or stop it altogether.
    • Ending the vrat: After completing the 10 days, resume regular meals gradually. A small, light meal to end the vrat is common, followed by gratitude and reflection.

    Mindful intentions

    • Remain steady in equanimity (sama) and compassion (ahimsa) throughout the period.
    • Use the vrat to cultivate self-control, non-violence, truth, and detachment from bodily comforts, while keeping the body healthy.

    Note

    • If you have any confusion about exact Digambara rules for a 10-day one-meal vrata, or how to observe it in your local sangh, seek guidance from your guru or an experienced Digambara practitioner. They can provide precise instructions that align with your community’s practice.
    • I can share more general Jain principles on fasting or help you prepare a simple, Brahmachari-style daily schedule if you’d like.
