What does Jainism think of Gita

    12 months ago 311

In Jainism, the Bhagavad Gita is not treated as a canonical scripture or as an authoritative spiritual guide. Here is the core Jain view in simple terms:

    • Authority and aim: Jainism relies on the teachings of the Tirthankaras and its own canonical texts. The Gita, being part of the Mahabharata, is not considered a primary source for Jain spiritual practice or doctrine.
    • Thematic differences: The Gita presents paths like action with detachment (nishkama karma) and devotion to Krishna as an incarnation of God. Jainism emphasizes non-violence (ahimsa), strict ethical conduct, and self-purification through the duties of a layperson or monk, with no need for a divine avatar or personal god as a liberating agent.
    • Concept of God and avatars: Jainism does not accept a creator God or the idea of an avatar who rescues beings. It centers on the Jain path of right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct to cleanse karma and attain liberation. The Gita’s theology of Krishna as God-figure and avatar is not aligned with Jain doctrinal positions.
    • Digambara vs. Śvetāmbara: Both traditions treat the Gita as a text outside their own core scriptures. They may discuss it in historical or comparative contexts, but it is not used as a source of Jain doctrine. Neither tradition adopts Krishna-centered devotion as a primary means to liberation.

If you’d like, I can point to Jain perspectives on specific verses or topics from the Gita (e.g., karma, detachment, dharma) and explain how Jain interpretation differs, with authentic Jain Arthas.
