10 days fast paryushan
In Jainism, Paryushan (the great observance) is observed for different durations by the two main sects:
- Digambar Jains: 10 days, called Das Lakshan Parva. Each day is dedicated to one of the ten supreme virtues (Uttam Kshama, Uttam Mardav, Uttam Arjava, Uttam Shaucha, Uttam Satya, Uttam Sanyam, Uttam Tap, Uttam Tyag, Uttam Akinchanya, Uttam Brahmacharya). Practices include fasting, pratikraman (repentance), svadhyaya (scripture study), and seeking forgiveness. You end with a forgiveness day around Anant Chaturdashi.
- Śvetāmbara Jains: 8 days, ending on Samvatsari, the day of universal forgiveness. The focus is on intense spiritual practices, forgiveness (Kshama), and scriptural readings (often Kalpa Sutra).
Key points:
- The main aim is purification, self-restraint, and forgiveness.
- Samvatsari (forgiveness day) is the highlight for many communities.
- The two traditions share the same spiritual goal, but differ in duration and some practices.
