Who are the Jain saints
Jain saints
- The most revered beings are the 24 Tirthankaras (enlightened teachers) who founded and revived the Jain path in different eras. They are venerated as perfect beings who showed the way to liberation. The list and their stories are central to Jain devotion in both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions.
- Along with the Tirthankaras, Jainism also honors Arihants (those who have conquered inner passions and attained kevala jnana) and Siddhas (liberated souls who have shed all karma). Mahavira is counted as the 24th and last Tirthankara, and is also regarded as an Arihant and a Siddha in Jain tradition.
- In practice, many revered monks and teachers from various Jain lineages are also called saints by followers, because they dedicate their lives to teaching, worship, and the welfare of others. The term “saint” is often used for highly realized monks and for those who have made significant spiritual contributions within their communities.
If you’d like, I can share a simple, traditional list of the 24 Tirthankaras and briefly note their symbols and key teachings. You can read more on the Jain Knowledge site for authentic details.
