How does nirjara burn karma? What is the principle of action (working principle) of nirjara and why does karma burn during this?

Nirjara means shedding or burning up karmic particles that are already attached to the soul. It is the opposite process to asrava (the influx of new karma). When nirjara happens, the accumulated karmas are reduced or destroyed, helping the soul move closer to liberation.

    Core idea

    • Karma is bound to the soul due to passions and wrong conduct (kasaya and pratikraman, wrong belief, attachment, anger, greed, etc.).
    • Nirjara is the deliberate effort to wear away, burn, or detach those karmic particles that are already attached.
    • There are two aspects of nirjara: external (bahir) practices like fasting, austerities, strict self-discipline, and internal (antar) cleansing like right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct with mental purification.

Working principle (how nirjara burns karma)

    • Law of karma: karma binds when there is sensory or mental activity rooted in passion. When such activity occurs, karmic particles attach and start to grow on the soul.
    • Nirjara reduces the stock of active karmas by creating conditions in which these karmic bonds are loosened or burned. This happens as the intensity and duration of genuine penance and disciplined conduct bring the mind to higher purity:
    - Reducing kasaya (passions) and replacing them with equanimity and self-control weakens the grip of existing karmas. - The soul’s vibrations become purer due to disciplined behavior, which causes the attached karmic particles to detach or burn away. - With less new influx (asrava) and a higher rate of shedding (nirjara), the overall karmic burden diminishes.
    • In Jain terms, the process is often described as karmas being burnt or consumed by tapas (austerities) and purified intention. The more sincere and intense the practice, the faster the shedding.

Why does karma burn during nirjara?

    • The karmic particles are not merely static; their attachment is sustained by ongoing passions and ignorance. Nirjara lowers those inflows by purifying thoughts, speech, and actions.
    • When the mind stabilizes in right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct, the inner heat (tapas) generated by discipline and detachment acts on the karmic matter, causing it to detach and eventually burn away.
    • As bondage (bandha) weakens and the soul’s conduct becomes steadily purer, the old karmas lose their grip and are gradually exhausted.

    Important notes

    • Digambar and Shwetambar traditions may describe nuances in how nirjara manifests and which practices are emphasized, but both agree that nirjara is the mechanism by which karmas are destroyed, not merely prevented.
    • Nirjara does not imply magical removal; it is the disciplined, steady spiritual effort that reduces the qualitative and quantitative load of karma on the soul over time.

If you’d like, I can share concise verses or sutra references that describe nirjara and its effect on karma from Jain scriptures, along with brief, clear definitions in the Digambar and Shwetambar contexts. However, I will keep the explanation aligned with authentic Jain understanding and avoid unrelated interpretations.
