If you drink only almond water, will it be considered as fast
In Jainism, the purpose of upvas (fasting) is to reduce harm and violence in thought, speech, and food. There are different kinds of fasts and different rules in Digambar and Shwetambar traditions.
- Strict fast (nirjala/upvas on a vrata): typically means you consume only water and avoid any food or solid item. In this case, almond water would not be allowed and would break the strict fast.
- More lenient observances (uttam or anulomita vrata): some communities allow limited liquids or certain foods while still keeping the spirit of restraint. If almond water is prepared in a simple way (no solid bits, no added spices or sugar) and is allowed by the guru or community’s particular vrata, it might be permitted. However, this is not universal and depends on the specific tradition and the guidance of one’s guru or samaj.
Important: because Jain practices vary by sect and lineage, exact rulings can differ. If you want a precise answer for your situation, consult the Jain guru or the specific vrata rules you follow.
