How many vows should shravik take
Shravik (lay follower) should follow twelve vows in total:
- Five main vows (Anuvratas): Ahimsa, Satya, Achaurya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), Aparigraha (non-attachment)
- Three merit vows (Guṇa-vratas): Dik vrata (limited area of activity), Bhoga-upbhoga vrata (limited use of resources), Anartha-danda vrata (avoidance of pointless sins)
- Four disciplinary vows (Śikṣā-vratas): Sāmāyika (daily equanimity), Deśāvālkāsika (Desāvakasika: limited activity by place/time), Paushādha vrata (limited ascetic life), Atithi-samvibhāga vrata (charity/guest conduct)
This structure is commonly taught for lay Jains in both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions, though wording and practice may vary by tradition. You can read more here
