How many vowes daily
In Jainism, the daily vows differ by the level of spiritual practice:
- For monks and nuns (ascetics): there are five great vows (mahavratas) observed at all times—ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (celibacy), and aparigraha (non-attachment).
- For lay followers (householders): there are five smaller vows (anuvratas) observed daily—ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya in practical sense (celibacy in conduct and fidelity within marriage), and aparigraha.
Differences between Digambar and Śvetambar traditions mainly concern ritual details and disciplines within the same vow framework; the basic count (five mahavratas for ascetics and five anuvratas for lay followers) remains the same in both.
