Why laghu shanti have 16 navkar karyotsarg?
Laghu Shanti is a very short prayer used before or along with Navkar mantra practice. Its 16 “navkar karyotsarg” are 16 small acts or commitments aimed at preparing the mind and speech, and at expressing reverence to the Jain path and the divine beings who show the right path (Arhants, Siddhas, Kevalins, etc.). The idea behind these 16 karyotsarg is to purify intention and remove mental obstacles so that the Navkar mantra can be absorbed with proper focus and inner cleanliness.
Why there are 16?
- In Jain Dharma, a compact set like 16 items serves as a manageable, easily-memorized framework to cover key aspects of right conduct, devotion, and humility in a short, daily practice.
- The exact phrasing and emphasis can differ a little between Digambar and Śvetambar traditions, which is why you’ll sometimes see minor variation in the list or emphasis.
What it achieves:
- Calms the mind and narrows the ego before prayer.
- Reaffirms faith in the Teachings (Dharma), the Tirthankaras, and the spiritual goal.
- Sets a devotional mood that aids sincere contemplation on right-view, right-attitude, and right conduct.
If you’d like, I can summarize the 16 items as they appear in a particular tradition (Digambar or Śvetambar) or point to a specific text that lists them.
