swadara santosh verses maithun virman vrat

    11 months ago 352

Certainly! In Jainism, the Maithun Virman Vrat (also known as Brahmacharya Vrat) is one of the five major vows (Mahavratas for ascetics, Anuvratas for householders). It pertains to celibacy or control over sensual pleasures, particularly related to sexual activity.

Swadara Santosh literally means "contentment with one’s own spouse." For Jain householders, this is the practical application of the Brahmacharya Anuvrat. While complete celibacy is required for monks and nuns, laypersons are expected to remain content with their own spouse and not seek sexual relations outside marriage.

    Swadara Santosh in Jainism

    • For householders (Shravaks/Shravikas):
    - They take the Anuvrat of Brahmacharya, which is to avoid sexual relations with anyone except their own spouse. - This is called "Swadara Santosh," i.e., being contented with one's own wife/husband. - Avoiding extramarital affairs, physical or even in thought, is emphasized. - It also includes avoiding stimulation through sensual entertainment or literature.

    Maithun Virman Vrat (Brahmacharya Vrat)

    • For ascetics (Munis/Aryikas):
    - The vow is total renunciation of all sexual activity, thoughts, words, and actions. - They practice complete celibacy (Brahmacharya Mahavrat).
    • For householders:
    - The vow is partial; they observe Brahmacharya Anuvrat, which is swadara santosh. - They must not: - Engage in sexual relations with anyone other than their spouse. - Encourage or support others in sexual misconduct. - Enjoy or consume any literature, entertainment, or conversation that incites sensuality.

    Verses and Scriptural References

    • Tattvartha Sutra (7.20):
“Parastrigamanam maithunam” — Sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s spouse is forbidden.
    • Ratnakaranda Shravakachara (Verse 61):
“Na parastrigamanam kuryaat patnyamapi yathavidhi” Translation: “One should not indulge in sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s own wife, and even with her, only in accordance with scriptural injunctions.”
    • Uttaradhyayana Sutra (Chapter 14):
Discusses celibacy and the importance of self-control for both monks and laypersons.

    In Summary

    • Swadara Santosh = Contentment with one’s own spouse; avoiding sexual relations outside marriage as a householder.
    • Maithun Virman Vrat = The vow to renounce sexual activity (absolute for ascetics, partial for householders).

This vow promotes purity in thought, word, and deed, fostering spiritual progress and minimizing harm (himsa) caused by uncontrolled sensual desires.
