Lonkashah (also spelled Lonka Shah) was a 15th-century Jain reformer from Gujarat. He is best known for founding the Sthanakwasi movement, a non-idol worshiping (anta-pujak) tradition that emphasized study of Jain scriptures, meditation, and ethical conduct. He argued that idols and temple worship were not supported by the Jain Agamas and encouraged a return to scriptural, inner spirituality. His preaching attracted many lay followers, and the movement eventually developed into the Sthanakvasi (and related) communities within the Svetambara tradition. In some accounts, his work is linked to the Dayagachcha or Lonka-gachcha lineage that grew out of his teachings. In brief: Lonkashah was a lay Jain reformer who sparked a major sectarian shift away from idol worship in the Svetambara world of his time.
