I had ulcers and had to rinse turmeric water to cure them is my fast broken
In Jain practice, health comes first. If you were observing a vrata (fast) and you took turmeric water to treat ulcers, that would typically count as breaking the fast, because it involved consuming something other than plain water.
What you can do now:
- If the ulcer is causing genuine health concerns, you may have partially or fully broken the fast for that day. Focus on healing and then resume the vrata as you are able.
- If you want to restore the fast after healing, you can perform pratikraman or samayik (self-purification practices) and re-commit to the fast once you are well enough to continue.
- In the future, consult your guru or a knowledgeable Jain elder about allowances for illness. Depending on the vrata you’re keeping (for example, a light upavasa versus a stricter no-food no-water fast), there may be different guidelines for medicinal needs.
If you’d like, tell me which specific vrata you were observing (for example, a daily upavasa, a parva vrata, or a more stringent fast), and I can explain the typical rules and what counts as breaking it in that context.
