What does Anitya Bhävanä means?
Anitya Bhävanä is a fundamental concept in Jainism, referring to the contemplation of impermanence or transitoriness. "Anitya" means impermanent, and "bhävanä" means meditation or reflection. Practitioners of Jainism contemplate Anitya Bhävanä to understand that all worldly things—be it wealth, relationships, the body, or status—are temporary and subject to change and decay.
By reflecting on the impermanent nature of all things, one develops detachment (vairagya) from material possessions and relationships, reducing attachment (rāga) and aversion (dveṣa). This helps in progressing on the spiritual path towards liberation (moksha), as attachment is a major cause of karmic bondage according to Jain philosophy.
Anitya Bhävanä is one of the twelve Bhāvanās (meditations or reflections) recommended for developing right perception (samyak darshan) and fostering spiritual progress in Jainism.
