Dev lok types and details in Jainism
In Jainism, Dev Lok refers to the heavenly abodes or realms where celestial beings (Devas) reside. These realms are part of Jain cosmology and are distinct from the ultimate goal of liberation (moksha), as beings in Dev Lok are still subject to the cycle of birth and death (samsara).
Types of Dev Lok in Jainism
According to Jain scriptures, there are four main categories (types) of Devas (celestial beings), each residing in different levels or regions of Dev Lok:
- Bhavanavasi Devas (Residential Devas):
- Also called Vaimanik Devas. - Reside in mansions (bhavanas) located in the lower regions of the universe, just above the hells (Naraka). - They are divided into ten classes, such as Asurakumara, Nagakumara, etc. - Their abodes are magnificent palaces.
- Vyantar Devas (Intermediary or Peripatetic Devas):
- Also live in the lower part of the universe but are more mobile and wander through various regions. - They include Yakshas, Rakshasas, Bhutas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Kimpurushas, and so on. - Known for their supernatural abilities and sometimes interact with humans.
- Jyotishka Devas (Luminaries or Stellar Devas):
- These are the celestial beings associated with heavenly bodies like the sun, moon, planets, and stars. - Their abodes are located in the middle of the universe, where these celestial bodies are believed to be.
- Vaimanik Devas (Heavenly or Astral Devas):
- Reside in the higher heavens (Urdhva Lok), above the middle world (Madhya Lok). - These heavens are further divided into multiple levels, including: - Six Lower Heavens (Kalpa): Saudharma, Ishana, Sanatkumara, Mahendra, Brahma, and Lantava. - Sixteen Upper Heavens (Anuttara): Higher than the Kalpas, inhabited by more advanced celestial beings. - The highest among these are the Anuttara heavens, where beings are born just before attaining liberation.
Key Features of Dev Lok
- Life Span: The lifespan of beings in Dev Lok is extremely long, ranging from thousands to billions of years, depending on the realm.
- Pleasures: Devas enjoy great pleasures and comforts, but these pleasures are temporary and bind them to samsara.
- Karma: Birth in Dev Lok is the result of accumulating punya (meritorious karma), but it is not the ultimate goal.
- No Liberation: Beings in Dev Lok cannot attain moksha directly from there; they must be reborn as humans to achieve liberation.
- Hierarchy: Each Dev Lok has its own hierarchy, with Indra (king of devas) as the chief in each Kalpa.
Important Points
- Dev Lok is not Moksha: Jainism teaches that even the highest heaven is still within the cycle of birth and death. Only the Siddha Lok (abode of liberated souls) is beyond samsara.
- Moral: While heavenly birth is considered auspicious, Jainism emphasizes striving for liberation rather than seeking rebirth even in Dev Lok.
