Why do Jains not consume alcohol?
Jains do not consume alcohol mainly because it harms spiritual progress and harms living beings in multiple ways.
- It violates ahimsa (non-violence): alcohol can lead to harming oneself or others through impaired judgment, violence, or accidents.
- It clouds the mind and weakens self-control: a core aim of Jain practice is clear awareness and steady restraint, which alcohol undermines.
- It undermines the vow of satya (truth) and brahmacharya (celibacy/chastity) and can lead to careless or dishonest behavior.
- It increases bad karma: intoxication is believed to generate mental impurities and negative karmic residues that hinder liberation.
- It conflicts with aparigraha (non-attachment) and austerity: Jain ethics emphasize simplicity and restraint; alcohol is seen as an unnecessary indulgence that distracts from spiritual aims.
In short, avoiding alcohol is part of keeping the mind pure, compassionate, and firmly oriented toward spiritual goals and right conduct.
