Types of prayapti
Prayapti (paryapti) means the powers or capacities that a jiva has at a given birth, which determine how it can function in the world. There are six main paryaptis:
- Ahara Paryapti: the power to take in food (nourishment) and convert it into energy for the body.
- Sharira Paryapti: the power to have and sustain a physical body.
- Indriya Paryapti: the power to have the sense organs (touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing).
- Shvasoshvas Paryapti: the power of breathing (respiration) and life-support processes.
- Bhasha Paryapti: the power to speak.
- Mana Paryapti: the power to think and deliberate (mind).
Notes:
- These paryaptis are part of the Jain view of how a jiva’s karmic particles shape its potential for experience in a new life.
- They are discussed in Jain philosophy in relation to how the soul takes on a body and enables perception, speech, and thinking.
There can be variations in how broadly people describe the list, but the six above are the commonly cited set in Jain teachings. In both major traditions (Śvetāmbara and Digambarā), the core idea remains the same: karmas influence the jiva’s paryapti, which in turn determines its capabilities in the new life.
