What Mala do we have to recite on each day of Ekashna during this tap?
In Jainism, during the practice of Ekashna Tap (a type of austerity where one eats only once a day), it is common to engage in spiritual activities such as reciting malas (prayer mantras or chants) to enhance spiritual merit.
There is no universally fixed mala (mantra) that must be recited on each day of Ekashna Tap, as practices may vary according to sect, tradition, or personal vows. However, traditionally, Jains recite the following malas during austerities like Ekashna Tap:
- Namokar Mantra Mala: This is the most fundamental and revered mantra in Jainism. It is highly recommended to recite the Namokar Mantra mala daily, especially during any tap (austerity). Some may recite it 9, 27, 108, or more times based on personal capacity.
- Other Common Malas (optional or as per vow):
- Logassa Sutra - Kalyanak Mala (Chanting the auspicious events of Tirthankaras) - Uvasaggaharam Stotra - Antaray Karma Nirjara Mala
Guidance:
- Always follow the specific niyam (vow) you have taken for your tap. If you have not taken a specific vow for a particular mala, the Namokar Mantra is always appropriate.
- Some groups or families may have traditions of reciting specific malas on certain days (e.g., Uvasaggaharam Stotra on Fridays, Bhaktamar Stotra on Mondays, etc.), but this is not universally mandated.
Summary: Reciting the Namokar Mantra mala daily is the most recommended practice during Ekashna Tap. If you have taken a particular niyam or follow a tradition for other malas, continue accordingly. Always focus on devotion, purity of mind, and right intention while reciting any mala during your tap.
