Importance of 10 days in dashlakshan

    12 months ago 76

Dash Lakshan Parva is the Digambara Jain festival of ten days, each day focusing on one supreme virtue (lakshana) of the soul. The period is a time of intensified practice, study, and self-discipline, often with fasting or restrained eating, scriptural discourses, and participation in confession (kshamavani) and pratikraman.

    Key points

    • Duration and purpose: Ten days dedicated to practicing and reflecting on ten virtues that guide a Jain life.
    • The ten virtues (one per day):
    1) Uttama Kshama — Supreme Forgiveness 2) Uttama Mardava — Supreme Humility 3) Uttama Arjava — Supreme Straightforwardness/Honesty 4) Uttama Shaucha — Supreme Purity/Contentment 5) Uttama Satya — Supreme Truth 6) Uttama Sanyam — Supreme Self-restraint 7) Uttama Tapa — Supreme Austerity 8) Uttama Tyag — Supreme Renunciation/Detachment 9) Uttama Akinchanya — Supreme Non-attachment 10) Uttama Brahmacharya — Supreme Celibacy
    • End and forgiveness: The period typically ends with Kshamavani (forgiveness day) and then a community confession (pratikraman), followed by Anant Chaturdashi celebrations in many places.
    • Traditions: In Digambar communities, these ten days are observed as the primary Dash Lakshan Parva. Shvetambar communities have Paryushan as their main annual observance (often eight days) with its own forgiveness rituals; the two practices are parallel but differ in duration and certain rites.
