how uttam sanyam is defined in jainism
Uttam Sanyam means Supreme Self-Restraint. In Jainism, it is the sixth virtue to cultivate to counteract the four negative passions (kashayas) and to control both the self and one’s actions. It has two aspects:
- Vyavahar Uttam Sanyam (conduct): restraining from harming any life and restraining from undesirable desires or passions in daily life.
- Nischay Uttam Sanyam (firm resolve): restraining harm to the self and keeping one's mind free from harmful desires and emotions.
Uttam Sanyam forms a core part of the Das Lakshan (ten characteristics) observed especially during Paryushan, and it is taught as essential for moving toward spiritual purity and liberation. It is described similarly in both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions as supreme self-restraint.
