which is old religion - Jainism or hinudism
Both Jainism and what is often called Hinduism are very ancient traditions.
- Hinduism (the broader Sanatana Dharma) has roots that go back to the Vedic age, roughly around 1500 BCE to 500 BCE, with older cultural and religious practices that predate Mahavira.
- Jainism regards itself as an ancient path too, tracing back to the Tirthankaras, with Mahavira traditionally placed around the 6th century BCE. Some Jain texts even speak of earlier Tirthankaras like Adinath (Rishabhanatha), whose era is described as very ancient in Jain tradition.
In short, the roots of Hinduism are generally considered older (Vedic period), while Jainism is also very ancient and established in the early post-Vedic era. Both are among the oldest living traditions, each with its own distinct teachings and lineage.
