Story of Arya Suhast Suri:
Arya Suhast Suri lived around the 1st century CE. He is best known for his association with the great Jain pilgrimage site of Shatrunjaya (Palitana) and his efforts in reestablishing Jainism after a period of decline.
According to Jain tradition, after the Nirvana of Bhagwan Mahavir, Jainism faced many challenges. There was a time when the sacred site of Shatrunjaya was abandoned due to foreign invasions and natural calamities. The temples were in ruins, and the practice of Jainism had significantly weakened in that region.
Arya Suhast Suri, with his deep knowledge and spiritual strength, traveled to Shatrunjaya with a group of disciples. He is credited with re-consecrating the main idol (mulnayak) of Lord Adinath (Rishabhdev) at the Shatrunjaya hill. This event is often referred to as "Shatrunjay Patta Sthapana"—the reestablishment of the holy seat.
Under his leadership, Jainism experienced a revival in the region. He inspired the local Jain community to rebuild the temples and restore regular worship and rituals. Arya Suhast Suri also played an important role in organizing the Jain Sangha (community) and codifying certain monastic practices.
