    Bharat maharaja jain story

    one year ago 255

Bharat Maharaja is a significant figure in Jainism, especially in the context of Jain cosmology and history. Here is his story according to Jain tradition:

    Bharat Maharaja in Jainism:

Bharat Maharaja was the eldest son of the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), and Empress Sumangala. He is considered one of the Chakravartins (universal monarchs) of Jain tradition.

    Early Life and Rule

After Lord Rishabhanatha renounced the world and attained Kevalgyan (omniscience), Bharat became the king. He was known for his strength, wisdom, and just rule. Bharat conquered the six divisions of the earth (the "six khands") and thus became a Chakravartin, a universal emperor.

The Symbolism of the Name “Bharat”

It is said that the present-day land of "Bharatvarsha" (India) is named after him. He ruled with dharma (righteousness) and brought prosperity to his subjects.

The Story of the Chakra and Renunciation

According to Jain texts, after conquering the world, Bharat returned to his capital, Ayodhya. One day, his chakra-ratna (divine discus weapon) stopped at the gates of Ayodhya and did not enter the city, signifying that someone equal to Bharat in power was present inside. It was discovered that his 99 younger brothers, except Bahubali, had renounced the world and become monks.

Bharat challenged Bahubali, his only remaining brother, for supremacy. They engaged in various contests. Bahubali won all the contests but realized the futility of worldly attachments and also renounced worldly life to become a monk.

    Bharat’s Realization and Renunciation

Witnessing his brothers’ renunciation and the impermanence of worldly power, Bharat too eventually realized the true path. Some Jain texts describe that he later took diksha (initiation) and attained liberation (moksha).

    Symbolism in Jainism

    • Bharat is an exemplar of worldly power and ultimate renunciation.
    • His story is a lesson in the impermanence of material success and the value of spiritual pursuit.
    • The episode of the chakra and the contest with Bahubali is depicted in Jain art and literature, highlighting the ideals of forgiveness, non-attachment, and spiritual victory.

    Cultural Legacy

The story of Bharat Maharaja is recounted in Jain scriptures such as the "Adipurana" by Acharya Jinasena and is an important part of Jain cultural heritage. The famous monolithic statue of Bahubali at Shravanabelagola is also intertwined with this story.

In summary: Bharat Maharaja is remembered as a great king who, after realizing the futility of worldly achievements, turned towards the spiritual path, embodying core Jain values of non-attachment and self-realization.
