Why we celebrate daslakshan parv
Daslakshan Parva is a Jain festival that centers on reflecting and renewing one’s commitment to the path shown by the Tirthankaras. “Daslakshan” means “ten lakshanas (signs/characteristics),” and the parva is a time when Jains contemplate these ten guiding qualities that lead a soul toward right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
Key ideas:
- It honors the exemplary life and virtues of a liberated soul as described in Jain scriptures.
- It invites practitioners to re-affirm vows such as truth, non-violence, non-stealing, chastity, and non-possessiveness, and to deepen awareness of right belief and right action.
- There is awareness of differences between Digambar and Śvetambar traditions in how the ten lakshanas are stated and interpreted, so the emphasis may vary by community.
- The overall aim is spiritual purification, detachment from ego, and progress toward kevala jnana (omniscient knowledge).
In short, Daslakshan Parva is celebrated to remember and internalize the ten fundamental virtues that guide a Jain toward spiritual awakening and Liberation.
