Day 6: Uttam Sanyam Dharma (Supreme Self-Control)

    What it means for you:

    • Uttam Sanyam is about the highest kind of self-control. It means guiding your mind, speech, and body so you don’t let angry thoughts, silly desires, or mean impulses take over.
    • When you practice Uttam Sanyam, you use right faith to see what is truly good for your soul, and you choose to act calmly and kindly, even when you feel restless or want something that isn’t good for you.

A simple way to tell the story to kids:

    • There was a king who loved comforts. One day, a gardener’s wife showed him a small lesson: even a five-minute indulgence in something fancy can lead to trouble. If we can endure small appeals to pleasure with patience, we become strong enough to handle bigger challenges. That is what Uttam Sanyam teaches: train your mind to stay calm and your actions to stay kind.

What to practice at home (kid-friendly ideas):

    • Before you speak or act in a tricky situation, count to three in your head and think: “Is this true, is it helpful, is it kind, and does it hurt no one?” If the answer is no, don’t say or do it.
    • Try a 5-minute “calm down” routine when you’re upset: close your eyes, take slow breaths, and imagine your soul as bright and peaceful.
    • Do one small restraint each day: perhaps choosing to walk away from a heated moment, or not grabbing something you’re told not to touch.

    Why it helps your soul:

    • Self-control keeps you from accumulating bad karma and helps you feel peaceful inside.
    • It also makes you a better friend, sister, or brother because you think before you act and speak.
