Who was kanji swami and how is mumukshu Jains are different from digamber Jain?

    Kanji Swami

    • He was a prominent Jain teacher and leader in the 20th century. Born in 1890 (Umrala, Gujarat) and passing away in 1980, he is best known for his teachings that drew deeply on Kundakunda’s Samayasara and for founding the Kanji Panth within the Digambar tradition. He emphasized personal effort (purusharth), the study of scriptures (swadhyaya), and a higher level of truth (nishchaya naya) in the path to liberation. He originally was a Sthanakvasi monk, but his later work led to a Digambara-inspired movement known as Kanji Panth. ( en.wikipedia.org, cs.colostate.edu)

    Mumukshu Jains vs Digambar Jains

    • Mumukshu = a seeker of liberation. In Jainism, this term describes a soul earnestly desiring moksha and the accompanying effort to attain it. It is a spiritual state or attitude, not a separate sect. Digambar Jains can include people who are mumukshu, as well as monks and nuns who follow Digambar practices and texts.
    • Digambar Jains = a major sect of Jainism that holds to sky-clad monastic ideals (nudity for monks in traditional Digambar practice) and trusts its own set of scriptures and interpretations (e.g., as seen in Kundakunda’s works). Kanji Swami is associated with the Digambar tradition and the Kanji Panth within Digambar Jainism. The Digambar path emphasizes renunciation, ascetic discipline, and the pursuit of true knowledge (nishcaya naya) as essential for liberation. ( en.wikipedia.org, cs.colostate.edu)

    • Important nuance: “Mumukshu” is about the soul’s longing and the method for liberation (as taught in Kundakunda’s and related texts). “Digambar” refers to a specific Jain sect with its own historical lineage, practices, and scriptures. A mumukshu can belong to Digambar or Shwetambar contexts, and Kanji Swami’s Kanji Panth illustrates a Digambar-influenced approach that centers on scriptural study and discerning knowledge. ( en.wikipedia.org, cs.colostate.edu)
    • Difference between Digambar and Shwetambar traditions (brief, simple):
    - Digambar Jains historically practice nudity for monks and have their own Jain scriptures and interpretations (including Kundakunda’s works as central texts for many Digambar groups, such as Kanji Panth). - Shwetambar Jains wear white clothes as renunciants and have a somewhat different collection of scriptures and interpretations. - Both share core Jain beliefs (ahimsa, karma, moksha) but differ in vows, monastic practices, and some canonical traditions. Kanji Swami’s lineage is rooted in Digambar philosophy and the Kanji Panth approach within that tradition. ( en.wikipedia.org, cs.colostate.edu)

If you’d like, I can share more about Kanji Swami’s key teachings (in his own words or summaries) and how the Kanji Panth interprets Samayasara, Pravacanasara, and Pancastikayasara.
