In Jainism, if a shravak (householder) fails to observe a vrata, the usual penance is Präyascitta (internal atonement) carried out through Pratikraman. This practice involves reflecting on the missed or violated vow, asking forgiveness from all beings including the Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Sadhus, and fellow beings, and resolving to improve. Pratikraman is done to purify the soul and to prevent future transgressions. There can be differences in wording or emphasis between Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, but the core idea—repentance, forgiveness, and renewed commitment—remains the same.
