    Meaning of each line in Alochana Path

    Here is a line-by-line meaning of Alochana Path (Alochana Paath). This prayer is a confession-prayer recited mainly during Pratikraman to acknowledge faults, seek forgiveness, and renew commitment to right conduct.

    Dohā (opening couplet)

    • वंदो पांचो परम – गुरु, चौबिसों जिनराज
    Meaning: I bow to the fivefold supreme ones: the guru and the twenty-four Jinas (Tirthankaras).
    • करूँ शुद्ध आलोचना, शुद्धि करन के काज ॥१॥
    Meaning: I will perform pure confession, for the work of purifying my mind and conduct. (Line 1 of the main text)

    • सुनिए जिन अरज हमारी, हम दोष किये अति भारी
    Meaning: Listen to our prayer, O Jinas, for we have committed many great faults.

    Meaning: Now the matter is to abandon them; we have taken refuge in you, the Jina-ruler (the Tirthankaras).

    • इक बे ते चउ इंद्री वा, मनरहित सहित जे जीवा
    Meaning: Of those beings with senses restrained and minds calm, who live without greed, etc. (recognition of living beings with self-control)
    • तिनकी नहि करुणा धारी, निरदई हो घात विचारी ॥३॥
    Meaning: Those who do not bear compassion for such beings and who harm without remorse are cruel.
    • समरम्भ समारम्भ आरम्भ, मन वच तन कीने प्रारम्भ
    Meaning: Initiation of thought, speech, and body; starting actions and schemes.
    • कृत कारित मोदन करिके, क्रोधादि चतुष्टय धरिके ॥४॥
    Meaning: Engaging in pleasures, and arousing the fourfold enemies: anger, pride, deceit, and greed.
    • शत आठ जु इमि भेदनतै, अघ कीने परिछेदन तै
    Meaning: Twenty-eight types of breakages/overstepping are committed; what wrongs remain to be counted?
    • तिनकी कहुं कोलो कहानी, तुम जानत केवलज्ञानी ॥५॥
    Meaning: Please tell the story of them; you alone, the all-knowing, know it fully.
    • विपरीत एकान्त विनय के, संशय अज्ञान कुनय के
    Meaning: In the opposite solitude of humility, the doubt and ignorance that arise from wrong beliefs.
    • वश होय घोर अघ कीने, वचतै नहि जाय कहीने ॥६॥
    Meaning: We fall under the strong influence of grave sins, and cannot speak out or refute them.
    • कुगुरुन की सेवा किनी, केवल अदया करि भीनी
    Meaning: Served evil (undisciplined) gurus/teachers, and performed only outward acts.
    • या विधि मिथ्या भ्रमायो, चहुँ गति मधि दोष उपायों ॥७॥
    Meaning: This false belief and illusion misled all directions; in every path there are faults and excuses.
    • हिंसा पुनि झूठ जु चोरी, पर वनिता सो द्रग जोरी
    Meaning: Violence, falsehood, and theft exist even for women in society, harming themselves.
    • आरम्भ परिग्रह भीनो, पन पाप जु या विधि कीनो ॥८॥
    Meaning: Initiation into attachments leads to sins and wrongdoing in many ways.
    • सपरस रसना घ्रानन को, द्रग कान विषय सेवन को
    Meaning: The senses (especially the tongue) indulge in intoxicants and sensory pleasures.
    • बहु करम किये मनमाने, कछु न्याय अन्याय न जाने ॥९॥
    Meaning: Many actions done by the mind’s whims, not distinguishing right from wrong.
    • फल पञ्च उदम्बर खाये, मधु मांस मद्य चित चाये
    Meaning: We have eaten pleasures and indulged, including sweet tastes, meat, wine, and intoxicants.
    • नहि अष्ट मूलगुण धारे, सेये कुव्यसन दुखकारे ॥१०॥
    Meaning: We do not uphold the eight fundamental virtues; these vices bring sorrow.
    • दूईबीस अभख जिन गाये, सो भी निशदिन भुंजाये
    Meaning: Twenty-two kinds of sins caused by when living beings (jivas) chant or utter them; still devour them daily.
    • कछु भेदाभेद न पायो, ज्यो त्यों करि उदर भरायो ॥११॥
    Meaning: No real distinction was found; we filled our bellies with ignorance and wrongdoing.
    • अनन्तानुबन्धी सो जानो, प्रत्याख्यान अप्रत्याख्यानो
    Meaning: Know the endless bonds of karma; renunciation and non-renunciation both have complexities.
    • संज्वलन चौकड़ी गुनिये, सब भेद जु षोडश गुनिये ॥१२॥
    Meaning: Consider the eightfold and sixteenfold categories of karmic distinctions, and their varieties.
    • परिहास अरति रति शोक, भय ग्लानि त्रिवेद संयोग
    Meaning: Mockery, attachment, sorrow, fear, and distress linked with the threefold fears.
    • पनबीस जु भेद भये इम, इनके वश पाप किये हम ॥१३॥
    Meaning: Twenty-five kinds of differences arose; we, under their control, committed sins.
    • निद्रावश शयन कराई, सुपने मधि दोष लगाई
    Meaning: While asleep, we let faults dream on; in dreams, we planted faults.
    • फिर जागी विषय वन धायो, नाना विध विष फल खायो ॥१४॥
    Meaning: Upon waking, we wandered into the forest of sense-pleasures and tasted various poisons of harm.
    • आहार विहार निहारा, इनमे नहि जतन विचारा
    Meaning: We observed meals and travels but did not carefully consider right conduct.
    • बिन देखि धरी उठाई, बिन शोधी वस्तु जु खाई ॥१५॥
    Meaning: We picked up and tasted objects without seeing or examining them carefully.
    • तब ही परमाद सतायो, बहुविधि विकल्प उपजायो
    Meaning: Then the supreme force afflicted us with many deceptive choices.
    • कछु सुधि बुधि नाहि रही है, मिथ्यामति छाय गई हैं ॥१६॥
    Meaning: Our understanding and intellect have faded; illusion has overshadowed truth.
    • मरजादा तुम ढिग लीनी, ताहू में दोष जु कीनी
    Meaning: O guide, you accepted the burden of guilt in this field of vows.
    • भिन भिन अब कैसे कहिये, तुम ज्ञान विषै सब पइये ॥१७॥
    Meaning: How can we now speak? You, who know the poison of all flaws, understand.
    • हा हा ! मैं दुठ अपराधी, त्रस जीवन राशि विराधी
    Meaning: Ha ha! I am the guilty sinner, burdened with the weight of life’s sins.
    • थावर की जतन न कीनी, उर में करुणा नहि लीनी ॥१८॥
    Meaning: I neglected prudent care; there was no compassion in my heart.
    • पृथिवी बहु खोद कराई, महलादिक जागाँ चिनाई
    Meaning: We have dug the earth and marked palaces; we created illusions and pride.
    • पुनि बिन गाल्यो जल ढोल्यो, पंखातैं पवन बिलोल्यो ॥१९॥
    Meaning: Water vanished without warning; winds stirred the feathers of ego and pride.
    • हा हा ! मैं अदयाचारी, बहु हरित काय जु विदारी
    Meaning: Ha ha! I am a lawless one, with many green (corrupt) deeds inside.
    • तामधि जीवन के खंदा, हम खाए धरी आनंदा ॥२०॥
    Meaning: In these wells of life I consumed shallow pleasures.
    • हा हा ! परमाद बसाई, बिन देखे अगनि जलाई
    Meaning: Ha ha! The supreme-illuminator dwells within; I lit a fire without seeing.
    • तामध्य जीव जे आये, ते हू परलोक सिधाये ॥२१॥
    Meaning: The beings who come in and out of this realm, by you, can reach liberation.
    • बीध्यो अन राति पिसायो, ईंधन बिन सोधि जलायो
    Meaning: Night and day we were tormented by afflictions; we burned fuel without proper fuel.
    • झाड़ू ले जागाँ बुहारी, चींटी आदिक जीव बिदारी ॥२२॥
    Meaning: With broom in hand, we woke and disturbed small beings like ants.
    • जल छानि जिवानी कीनी, सो हू पुनि डारि जु दीनी
    Meaning: We caused the life-form’s water to be scarce and then abandoned it once again.
    • नहिं जल थानक पहुँचाई, किरिया बिन पाप उपाई ॥२३॥
    Meaning: We did not provide water to save lives; without proper action, we commit sin.
    • जल मल मोरिन गिरवायो, क्रमि कुल बहु घात करायो
    Meaning: Water contaminated by filth harms many lineage and families.
    • नदियन बिच चीर धुवाये, कोसन के जीव मराये ॥२४॥
    Meaning: Ravaging rivers and tearing through, many beings die by our actions.
    • अन्नादिक शोध कराई, तातें जु जीव निसराई
    Meaning: We studied food and resources only to keep beings away or cause harm.
    • तिनका नहिं जतन कराया, गलियारे धूप डराया ॥२५॥
    Meaning: We did not care for grain; we exposed beings to sun and heat in corridors.
    • पुनि द्रव्य कमावन काजै, बहु आरम्भ हिंसा साजै
    Meaning: Again seeking material wealth, many efforts were used to organize violence.
    • किये तिसनावश अघ भारी, करुणा नहिं रंच विचारी ॥२६॥
    Meaning: In such acts, heavy sins were committed; not even a trace of compassion was thought.
    • इत्यादिक पाप अनन्ता, हम कीने श्री भगवंता
    Meaning: These endless sins are ours; we have done them to the revered Lord (Jina).
    • संतति चिरकाल उपाई, वाणी तै कहिय न जाई ॥२७॥
    Meaning: The lineage seeks a lasting remedy, but words cannot describe it fully.
    • Tako जु उदय अब आयो, नाना विध मोहि सतायो
    Meaning: Now the rising dawn has come; many kinds of suffering have afflicted me.
    • फल भुंजत जिय दुःख पावै, वचतै कैसे करि गावै ॥२८॥
    Meaning: The mind tastes the fruit of sorrow; how can I speak and sing its remedy?
    • तुम जानत केवलज्ञानी, दुःख दूर करो शिवथानी
    Meaning: You, the sole-knower, know the way to remove this pain—please help.
    • हम तो तुम शरण लहि है, जिन तारन विरद सही हैं ॥२९॥
    Meaning: We have sought refuge in you; you are capable of saving us from these sins.
    • इक गाँवपति जो होवे, सो भी दुखिया दुःख खोवै

    • अंजन से किये अकामी, दुःख मेटो अंतरजामी ॥३१॥
    Meaning: With your glance or touch you can remove inner suffering.
    • मेरे अवगुन न चितारो, प्रभु अपनों विरद सम्हारो
    Meaning: Do not dwell on my faults, Lord; protect me by upholding my vow.
    • सब दोष रहित करि स्वामी, दुःख मेटहु अंतरजामी ॥३२॥
    Meaning: Remove all faults, O Lord; dissolve the inner sorrow.
    • इन्द्रादिक पद नहिं चाहूँ, विषयनि में नाहिं लुभाऊँ
    Meaning: I desire no godly status or kingship; I will not be lured by sensual pleasures.
    • रागादिक दोष हरिजे, परमातम निज पद दीजे ॥३३॥
    Meaning: Remove the passions and faults; grant me the supreme soul’s pure state of being.

    Dohā (closing couplet)

    • दोष रहित जिनदेव जी, निज पद दीज्यो मोय
    Meaning: O Jina, grant me a faultless state and give me your own pure stage.
    • सब जीवन के सुख बढ़े, आनन्द मंगल होय ॥
    Meaning: May all beings have happiness and auspicious joy.

    • अनुभव माणिक पारखी, जौहरी आप जिनन्द
    Meaning: A true seeker who has inner awareness; an expert who sees the essence of the soul (Jina).
    • येही वर मोहि दीजिये, चरण शरण आनन्द ॥
